The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science focuses on One Health, an integrated approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. This approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, helping to address the full spectrum of disease control and contribute to global health security.
The VH Faculty hosts SLU Future One Health, a strategic platform for interdisciplinary research, education, and collaboration for good health and welfare for animals and humans in sustainable ecosystems. A One Health Hub linked to animal husbandry will be established, focusing on three core areas: 1) comparative medicine; 2) antimicrobial resistance; and 3) healthy food-producing animals in circular systems.
The Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare aims to promote good animal husbandry and welfare, as well as sustainable food production with high product quality through research and education.
Subject Description
The subject of One Health focuses on food production from animals (cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, and farmed fish) in circular systems, emphasizing the interactions between food-producing animals, humans, and the environment.
Duties
- Develop and lead internationally successful research.
- Develop, lead, and participate in teaching at first, second, and third cycle levels.
- Mainly teach in sustainable animal production, but also in other programmes and courses.
- Develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, public authorities, industry, organizations, and society.
- Collaborate with other SLU research teams to strengthen interdisciplinary One Health activities.
- Apply for external research funding from national and international sources.
- Supervise doctoral students.
- Contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU.
- Communicate research findings to society.
- Perform administrative duties within the department, faculty, and university.
- Be able to use Swedish as the working language within four years.
The department uses Swedish and English in parallel. The professor should be able to perform the majority of their tasks in English, but must be able to use Swedish as their working language within four years. The department will provide support with language learning.
