Postdoctor in Sleep research and sleep medicine

Reference number PAR 2024/1164

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56,000 students and 6,600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine, and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.

Sleep research is important for understanding the mechanisms behind sleep and developing effective treatments for sleep disorders, which can improve both individual health and societal productivity. The Center for Sleep and Wakefulness Disorders at the Sahlgrenska Academy has been conducting translational research in this area for several decades and is seeking a postdoctor for advanced analysis of sleep, respiratory, and cardiovascular biosignals. The research group is interdisciplinary and works on epidemiological, mechanistic, diagnostic, and therapeutic studies around clinically significant sleep and wakefulness disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia.

Subject area

Sleep research and sleep medicine

The candidate will analyse and quantify long-term measurements of respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurophysiological biosignals from sleep studies. New analytical methods in the form of machine learning and artificial intelligence need to be further developed and applied for improved endotyping and phenotyping of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems during different sleep stages. Data are collected in large epidemiological cohorts and from several clinical studies in patients with sleep disorders. Advanced statistical models are necessary to link these phenotypic characteristics with clinical outcomes in patients with sleep disorders.

Duties

The work involves data management and analysis of data from various studies. It also includes project management: for example, planning and applying for ethical approval, organizing research meetings, meeting deadlines according to the schedule, and reporting back to funders. The work requires good knowledge of signal analysis of physiological signals such as respiration, cardiovascular function, and sleep function. We expect the work to be conducted independently and in collaboration with the research group, and that the postdoctoral researcher actively participates in the writing of scientific articles and applications for future funding.

Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Assessment criteria

A PhD in medical biosignal analysis is required. Experience in analysing physiological signals and sleep parameters (respiration, cardiovascular, and neurophysiological signals) is highly meritorious. Knowledge of Matlab, Python, and statistical programs such as R or STATA is advantageous. It is important that the applicant can collaborate well with other researchers and clinicians within a larger team. The applicant should be able to express themselves in English, both in writing and speaking. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability, such as being proactive and flexible.
