Thesis Work - Reaction Force Measurement Methodology 2.0
Functional area: Engineering
Country: Sweden
City: Stockholm
Company name: Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB
Date of posting: Nov 20, 2024
Contribute to more ergonomic power tools by developing better ways of measuring load exposure from the tools
Background
Human operators using handheld tightening tools (i.e. nutrunners) are exposed to reaction loads by the tool as a result of the tightening process. In the mission to reduce the physical demands associated with tightening tool use, and thereby improve the ergonomics of the tools, there is a need to systematically measure the reaction load exposure from the tightening tools. Current methods of measuring such reaction forces from the tools are bulky and change the inertial properties of the tool, making them both inaccurate and difficult to apply in real assembly environments. Therefore, we see a need to develop a lightweight, sophisticated means of measuring load exposure from handheld tightening tools. This would enable ergonomics assessments of tightening tools in real assembly environments, without changing the dynamic properties (mass and inertia) of the tool.
Mission
To develop a lightweight means of measuring load exposure from handheld tightening tools. The measurement technique could be based on alternative (i.e. other than load cells) sensors as a way of indirectly measuring, calculating, or estimating, the reaction load exposure from the tools. Sensors could be, but are not limited to, accelerometers, gyroscopes, strain-gauges and IMUs.The work might also require the creation of a model of a tool to estimate the force exposure from indirect measurements.
