Volvo Cars have created world-changing innovations since the first Volvo rolled off the production line in 1927. With our five fully electric cars (EV’s) the EX40, the EC40, the EX30, the EM90 & the EX90 already on the market and another five models in development, full electrification remains a key pillar of Volvo Cars product strategy. Our long-term aim remains to become a fully electric car company, and we also aim to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
Within Propulsion & Energy unit, we belong to Power Electronics department with the key product design responsibilities of traction Inverters (DC-AC), onboard chargers (AC-DC) & DC-DC converters. Currently, we are working on our third-generation power electronics products that goes into fully electric platform SPA3 with the forthcoming all-electric new EX60 as a first car on this platform. We are constantly working to improve our power electronics products design in terms of efficiency, power density, weight and cost with enhanced quality from one generation to the next. We have highly skilled team members in each of the technical domain such as power electronics systems, hardware and software designs. Most importantly, we prioritize the safety of the customers when using our vehicles and we apply this fundamental requirement to all our product designs.
What you'll do
In this role as Power Electronics System Architect, you will be part of Power Conversion Systems group focusing mainly on the systems architectures & design of DC-DC & AC-DC converters (known as on-board charger), technology roadmaps of conversion products & advance engineering projects in early concept phase. Systems design in Power Electronics require solid understanding of HW & SW designs including functional safety aspects.
The responsibilities include:
1. Design of power conversion product architectures with the best possible integration alternatives to optimize for the KPI’s such as energy efficiency, cost, power density & weight etc.
2. Working closely with concept leaders, program managers & technology managers to define the future technology roadmap & solving the critical technical issues in ongoing programs
3. Define & Leading the Advance Engineering projects from early concept stage and derive the high-level pre-requisites for the next generation power conversion products
4. Design & build DC-DC & AC-DC power conversion system architectures w.r.t input requirements
5. Design & modeling of DC-DC & AC-DC power conversion topologies using simulation tools (PLECS, MATLAB or any SPICE based tools)
6. Leading the cross-functional system design activities related to DC-DC & AC-DC system architectures
7. Support System Engineers in the team including Functional Safety design aspects (as per ISO26262) with requirements breakdown and in FMEA activities
8. Support Software Engineers with the requirements, state machines & SW logic diagrams
9. Benchmarking of Electric Vehicle propulsion architecture designs including the trends of integration (X in 1), Power Conversion topologies with key components (MOSFET’s, Inductors, Transformers, PCB’s. thermal & mechanical aspects)
What you'll bring
• Degree in Electrical / Electronics engineering or equivalent background
• At least 8+ years of experience in Power Electronics products design
• Solid understanding of Electric Vehicle propulsion HV Electrical architecture designs including HV batteries, AC-DC, DC-DC & DC-AC (traction Inverter) & other auxiliary HV loads
• Strong understanding of DC-DC or AC-DC converters design – both theory & hands-on practical design
• Good knowledge of DC-DC & AC-DC converter modulation techniques & control loop designs
• Prior experience with automotive power conversion products (HW, SW or System) design throughout complete product development life cycle
• Good understanding of DC-DC / AC-DC firmware development processes & tools
• Knowledge of semiconductors (Si, SiC, GaN) & magnetic components
• Basic knowledge of FuSa as per ISO26262 mainly Part 4,5 & 6
• Self-going & structured person with practical approach in problem solving
