As a Lead Electrode Engineer at Northvolt, you will play a crucial role in optimizing the wet mixing process for anode and cathode slurries. Drawing upon your extensive experience with mixing technologies, powder and fluid handling, and formulation, you will lead strategic technology decisions and drive improvements in efficiency and quality across our production lines.

Currently the team consist of 5 subject matter experts, who's experienced in a specific processes. We aim to expand the team to at least 10 engineers. Our team's overarching objective is to drive innovation and advancement within the battery industry. This includes introducing new technologies and next-generation products, leading the scale-up process from pilot line to mass production, and resolving bottlenecks by integrating new technologies into existing production lines. We prioritize understanding the fundamental structure-property relationship of the electrode and conduct trials to enhance our understanding and share knowledge with fellow electrode engineers.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Optimize wet mixing recipes for anode and cathode slurries to achieve homogeneity and ideal dispersion of raw materials.
  • Characterize anode, cathode slurries, and electrode properties to ensure optimal performance.
  • Lead strategic technology decisions in mixing, raw material delivery, and handling, including make or buy determinations.
  • Improve powder dosing accuracy, efficiency, and reproducibility to enhance overall process efficiency.
  • Develop and optimize strategies for raw material feeding and slurry delivery to coating heads, ensuring consistency and reliability.

As we work towards building a mass production facility, we require individuals with deep industrial and theoretical knowledge of the electrode process. The ideal candidate will contribute by conducting trials and research to obtain and implement crucial learnings. Given the simultaneous nature of this work alongside production, engineers must be capable of independently solving complex problems while maintaining a relative distance from direct production involvement. Contribution stems from applying first principles to identify root causes of issues and leveraging experience and knowledge to propose unconventional solutions.

We believe that you have :

  • MSc or PhD in Material Science/Battery Engineering/Chemical Engineering
  • 8+ years working experience with different mixing technologies, e.g. continuous or semi-continuous mixing, dry coating
  • Experience with powder and fluid handling
  • Intrinsic curiosity and interest to learn and develop
