The Department of Animal Biosciences

The Department of Animal Biosciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education and research in several basic and applied areas including genetics, breeding, and health of various animal species. Our research covers everything from production animals to sport and companion animals.

The current employment is placed in the research group of applied genetics focusing on the genetically improving traits in animal populations.

The subject covers genetics relevant to the breeding of farmed animals (cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, poultry) and sport and companion animals (horses, dogs, cats). This includes the development of methods for genetic evaluation, breeding objectives, and conservation of genetic variation.

Duties

The applicant will be expected to:

  • develop and lead internationally successful research
  • develop, lead, and participate in teaching at first, second, and third cycle levels
  • primarily teach in animal breeding and genetics
  • develop and maintain national and international networks
  • collaborate with other SLU research teams
  • apply for external research funding
  • contribute to the strategic development of the department
  • communicate research findings to society
  • perform administrative duties
  • possibly have a managerial role
  • be able to use Swedish as the working language within four years.

The department uses Swedish and English in parallel. The professor should primarily perform tasks in English but must be able to use Swedish within four years. The department will provide support with language learning.

The applicant must:

  • have a doctoral degree in genetics and the qualifications for appointment as an associate professor
  • demonstrate research expertise in at least two animal species
  • demonstrate teaching expertise and integrate research into teaching
  • have led a successful research team
  • have competed for substantial external research funding
  • have good knowledge of English.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for employment will focus on the degree of proficiency required for eligibility.

Research expertise assessment will be based on:

  • completed and ongoing research relevance
  • ability to initiate and run successful research
  • ability to compete for external funding
  • experience as a principal supervisor for doctoral students.

Teaching expertise will be assessed based on:

  • planning and implementation of teaching
  • integrating research into teaching
  • supervision of courses
  • training in teaching and learning
  • pedagogic vision.

Additional abilities assessed will include:

  • developing and leading academic activities
  • collaborating with stakeholders
  • communicating research work.

The appointment will be offered to the applicant deemed to have the best skill set for the duties and contribute positively to the organization.
