Stockholm, Stockholm, Sweden Euro Math Soc Full time
The Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University has with its long tradition of excellent research a prominent place in Scandinavian mathematics. The department consists of three divisions: Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Computational Mathematics. The research at the Division of Mathematics ranges over many different areas of mathematics, from algebra, geometry and analysis to mathematical logic. We especially seek to recruit PhD students for the following projects: Topics in algebraic topology (supervised by Alexander Berglund) Arithmetic geometry: Moduli spaces, Galois representations and tautological rings (supervised by Jonas Bergström) Topics in Diophantine analysis (supervised by Matthew de Courcy-Ireland) Group theory, arithmetic geometry and representation theory (supervised by Wushi Goldring) Analysis and geometry: Crystalline structures (supervised by Pavel Kurasov) Topology of moduli spaces (supervised by Dan Petersen) Geometric analysis with applications to general relativity (supervised by Oliver Petersen) It is also possible to apply for projects with other supervisors at the department. Information about available PhD supervisors and possible PhD thesis projects, including more information about the above projects, can be found on the Department's webpage. We recommend that you contact a potential supervisor before submitting the application. Qualification requirements In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications. You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree, or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere. In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of mathematics stipulates that applicants must have completed courses equivalent to at least 90 credits in mathematics. This must include the courses Abstract Algebra (7.5 credits), Foundations of Analysis (7.5 credits) and Complex Analysis (7.5 credits) as well as a degree project amounting to at least 15 credits, or equivalent. Selection The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates' documented knowledge in the relevant field of research, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous studies and grades, the quality of degree projects, references, relevant experience, the candidate's written motivation for applying for the position and, for select applicants, interviews. Please note that applicants may be called to an interview on a short notice. Tentatively, interviews will be held in Mid-May. Important: Your references should send us recommendation letters no later than April 22, 2025, via e-mail to phd-apply@math.su.se and state in the subject line: SU FV-0826-25 + name of the applicant.
