Are you passionate about advancing the transition to sustainable transport and energy systems? We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral student to join our research team in the rapidly developing scientific area of hydrogen technology through environmental and energy systems analysis.

About Us

Our research aims to provide long-term, and most often global, perspectives on future renewable fuels for transport. We seek to rigorously analyze the feasibility of energy transitions, utilize empirical as well as estimated data, and explore whether and under what conditions changes can occur as well as the cost-effectiveness and environmental effects of such changes. Research tools include life cycle environmental assessments, techno-economic assessments, and cost-minimizing models where all energy sectors compete for the same primary energy sources in a future carbon constrained world.

The position will be hosted by the Maritime Environmental Sciences division at the Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences. Our research team, presently consisting of three senior researchers, four doctoral students, and two postdocs, is embedded in an interdisciplinary environment, where we collaborate closely with other research teams at Chalmers, including technology experts, systems engineers, and natural and social scientists conducting research on solutions to major environmental challenges. We also collaborate with international organizations within academia and industry.

About The Research Project

To reduce climate impact from transport, technologies such as electrification, hydrogen, electrofuels and biofuels are being developed. In this position, the focus will be on hydrogen, as part of a larger collaboration project, HyLo, demonstrating hydrogen trucks and refueling infrastructure. The position will also be part of Technologies and innovations for a future green hydrogen economy (TechForH2) competence center.

Your research will initially focus on hydrogen storage and distribution challenges, from environmental and cost perspectives. This will be assessed by developing a model for hydrogen refueling stations to assess and compare different technology options, assuming different scenarios, by modelling cost, efficiency, materials, potential leakages etc.

The following requirements are mandatory

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in a relevant field such as industrial ecology, energy technology, or applied mathematics, with a specialization in energy systems analysis, energy modelling, or life cycle assessment.
  • Proven experience with data analysis and programming (e.g., GAMS, Matlab, Python or R) is also a must, as well as a strong commitment to scientific inquiry.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • You are a motivated and independent researcher with good analytical skills who is interested in the transport sector transition, interdisciplinary research with a holistic systems perspective.
  • We also believe that you have a strong curiosity and a genuine wish to learn and develop your skills and knowledge further in the fields of research, research communication and project management.
  • for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

The following knowledge will strengthen your application

  • Knowledge of alternative transport fuels is beneficial.

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Energy, Environment and Systems.
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 10-20 percent of working hours
  • The position is part of the competence centre TechForH2, focusing on hydrogen for transport, in which several doctoral students and postdocs are engaged.
  • Your time will be dedicated to research and doctoral courses required for obtaining a PhD, which include reviewing literature, participating in the design of research studies, interacting with companies and authorities, collecting and analysing empirical data, and disseminating research results in scientific journals and reports as well as to industry and public.

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
