We are looking for
We are seeking a talented and experienced research assistant to join our international project: Climate-Induced Migration in Africa and Beyond (CLIMB). CLIMB is a collaborative endeavor funded by the partners of the Belmont Forum (Swedish Research Council, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye, Austrian Science Fund, and US National Science Foundation). The project seeks to leverage Big Data and combine them with traditional data to better understand and predict Climate-Induced Migration in Africa and Beyond. As a research assistant, you will assist the principal investigator to conduct research tasks, such as literature review, collecting and analyzing various datasets, drafting scientific reports as well as to engage in project management, dissemination, among other activities. The research assistant will also be expected to organize project meetings and workshops, and to maintain regular contacts with stakeholders.

Work duties

  • Conduct literature review, data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and correlations in climate/environment and migration data.
  • Develop predictive models and algorithms.
  • Interpret results to provide actionable insights.
  • Collaborate with consortium partners and stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain scalable data pipelines for data processing and model deployment.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in machine learning algorithms and technologies.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications
Specific requirements for this position:

  • Master's degree in Migration Studies, Statistics, Demography, Data Science or a related field.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and/or R.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms and statistical techniques.
  • Experience with data visualization libraries such as gplot.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in across multi-national teams and communicate effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

The following would be of benefit for the position:

  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex datasets, identify patterns, and extract meaningful insights.
  • Machine Learning Expertise: Proficiency in building and deploying machine learning models for various applications, including predictive analytics and classification.
  • Statistical Knowledge: Strong understanding of statistical concepts and techniques, including hypothesis testing, regression analysis, simulation and forecasting.
  • Programming Proficiency: Fluency in programming languages such as Python or R, with experience in developing efficient and scalable code for data analysis and model development.
  • Data Visualization: Capability to visualize data effectively using libraries like ggplot to communicate insights and findings.
  • Problem-Solving Ability: Aptitude for solving complex problems using innovative and creative approaches, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Team Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across multi-national teams, working towards common goals and objectives.
  • Continuous Learning: Eagerness to stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in data science, machine learning, and related fields
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing research requirements and priorities, while maintaining a high level of performance and productivity.
