PhD in Radio Astronomy Instrumentation: Superconducting Electronics

Gothenburg, Västra Götaland, Sweden Chalmers tekniska högskola Full time

The Group at Chalmers is a leader in Terahertz instrumentation for radio astronomy. Our team comprises scientists, physicists, and engineers who specialize in superconducting electronics, terahertz technologies, material science, low-temperature physics, thin-film technology, and microwave engineering. This diverse approach enables us to develop cutting-edge instruments for radio astronomy and environmental sciences.

GARD, a globally recognized name in Terahertz instrumentation, has made significant contributions to renowned projects such as Herschel HIFI, ALMA, and APEX. Working closely with astronomers, GARD collaborates on designing future instruments to explore profound questions about the universe.

Project Overview
Developing multipixel heterodyne receivers plays a vital role in advancing astronomical and atmospheric research. These receivers facilitate simultaneous observations across various frequency bands, enhancing data acquisition rates and telescope capabilities. This technology optimizes observation time utilization, particularly during limited THz observation periods, and enables multi-color operations for detailed mapping of the interstellar medium and improved atmospheric monitoring for insights into star formation and atmospheric chemistry.

This Ph.D. project aims to create an advanced terahertz multi-pixel heterodyne receiver utilizing SIS and HEB technologies. The primary focus is on integrating broadband capabilities into the receiver design, enabling efficient operation across terahertz frequencies. It involves addressing complexities in developing advanced broadband terahertz waveguides and layouts, as well as overcoming challenges like signal attenuation, diffraction limits, and thermal noise. The goal is to achieve compact and efficient designs suitable for cryogenic environments and practical applications in radio astronomy.

Major Responsibilities
As a Ph.D. student, you will engage in research encompassing electromagnetic simulation, fabrication, and experimental measurements. You will conceptualize scientific ideas and communicate your findings effectively, both verbally and in writing. The role also involves teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate level, amounting to approximately 20% of your time. A collaborative mindset, self-motivation, meticulous attention to detail, and robust problem-solving skills are key attributes for this position.
