University lecturer in occupational therapy, combined with a position as an occupational therapist at the University Hospital

The Department of Women's and Children's Health is an international and multi-professional department with a focus on health and welfare. The global health perspective is always present, and we collaborate across professions and clinical areas, both in education and in research. For more information about the institution, see .

At the Department of Women's and Children's health, a new three-year educational program in occupational therapy at bachelor's level will start in autumn 2024. The occupational therapy program has health promotion and prevention as well as innovations in occupational therapy as profile areas.

Description of the subject area
Occupational therapy and activity science develops knowledge about what people do in everyday activities, such as at home, school, at work and in their free time, and how participation and involvement in activities enables health and development. The starting point is the individual's ability and conditions to carry out activities in interaction with their surroundings. By preventing, improving or compensating for impaired ability, opportunities are created for individuals to participate in activities that they want or need to be able to perform in order to have a functioning everyday life.

Duties
Teaching, research and administration within the subject area. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration, quality work and pedagogical development as well as supervision of students at all educational levels. It includes participating in the planning and implementation of the educational program in occupational therapy at bachelor's level. Teaching takes place, among other things, in a modern clinical training center with premises intended for the occupational therapy program. Working continuously with the development of the program's content and quality is an important part. Research includes initiating and independently leading research and development projects within the subject area. Otherwise, it includes participating in the institution's activities and following developments within one's own subject and societal developments in general.

The employment includes clinical duty which is assigned to the Geriatrics, rehabilitation medicine and pain center at the University Hospital and is estimated to be 1/3 of the working time. The clinical service includes conducting research and research-supporting activities and stimulating clinical development work as well as conducting specialized and evidence-based care. There is high scientific competence in clinical operations and good opportunities to conduct multidisciplinary projects.

Eligibility requirements
Eligible to be employed as a university lecturer is someone who has demonstrated pedagogical skills, has completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. (HF ch. 4 § 3) According to the Employment Regulations for Uppsala University (AO), the general eligibility requirement for teachers is that the applicant must have the ability to cooperate and otherwise meet the suitability requirements needed to perform the duties well (AO § 5).

The scientific skill must have been demonstrated through independent research efforts of high quality. The applicant's contribution to the international and national scientific community must be assessed, among other things, based on the quality and scope of scientific publication (see AO § 34). The requirements for international qualifications must be assessed with regard to the nature of the subject and specific conditions.

The pedagogical skill must have been demonstrated through qualifications in education and teaching (see AO § 22). A prerequisite for pedagogical skills to be considered present is the completion, for the activity, of higher education pedagogical training, covering at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the higher education can be completed during the first two years of employment.

The applicant must have documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. See § 6 AO.

For eligibility for this employment, identification as an occupational therapist is required. The applicant must have identification as an occupational therapist or have applied to the National Board of Health and Welfare for Swedish identification as an occupational therapist by the application date. However, the applicant must have obtained Swedish identification as an occupational therapist at the latest when the decision on employment is made.

Basis of assessment
When selecting qualified applicants, weight will be attached to scientific and pedagogical skills in equal measure. Clinical skills are important and will be given weightage. Particular emphasis will be placed on documented clinical skills as an occupational therapist. Documented skill in supervision at a basic level and advanced level is meritorious.

Scientific skill refers to research merit. When assessing scientific skill, scientific quality must be taken into account in the first place. The scope of the research, primarily with respect to depth and breadth, must also be given importance. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at research level, the ability to competitively obtain funds for research, as well as demonstrated ability to interact both within science and with the surrounding society must be given importance (AO § 20). See also Guidelines and assessment bases for the recruitment and promotion of teachers in the scientific field of medicine and pharmacy (RB) § 7.

Pedagogical skill refers to educational qualifications. When assessing pedagogical skill, pedagogical quality must be taken into account in the first place. Scope, both width and depth, must be given importance. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as the ability to link teaching to research, must be given importance. The ability to cooperate with the surrounding society through education should also be part of the pedagogical skill (AO § 22). See also RB § 8.

Clinical skill is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training as well as participation in clinical development work. Clinical development work involves initiatives such as improved or more efficient health care. See AO § 24.

Basis for assessment, other skills
Administrative skills and management skills are important for employment and will be given weight. Documented experience in work management and organizational tasks that are suitable for the assignment are meritorious. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community as well as to inform about research and development work will be taken into account.

According to §§ 27-28 of the Employment Regulations, administrative skills are demonstrated, among other things, through the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and appropriate way, as well as through the ability to specify and keep time frames. The skill includes overall business planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the business's priorities, as well as the ability to work structured and based on an awareness of goals and quality. See also RB § 9.

Management skills are demonstrated through the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions required to effectively reach common goals. Ability to coordinate the group as well as to contribute to creating commitment, participation and job satisfaction as well as the ability to handle conflicts are further examples of demonstrated skill. See also RB § 9.

When assessing collaboration skills, experience and skill in popular science work, editorship and other activities related to knowledge exchange between universities and the outside world, as well as experience in innovation and entrepreneurship must be given importance. See also RB § 10.

In an overall assessment of the applicant's merits, parental leave, part-time work due to caring for children, union assignment, military service or the like must be taken into account as work experience. (Section 94 AO)

When the university hires new teachers, the applicants must be chosen who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skill, are deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks and to contribute to the positive development of the business. (Section 4 AO).

The equality aspect must be applied in employment if, after a qualitative assessment, it appears that two applicants of different genders have equivalent or nearly equivalent qualifications and if either gender is underrepresented (constitutes less than 40% within the current position category and at the current workplace). (Section 95 AO)

All merits must be documented so that both quality and extent can be assessed.

When assessing submitted applications, international experts may be called upon. In this event, application documents written in Swedish may need to be sent to a translator hired by the university.
