PhD position in Medical Science

We are looking for a qualified candidate to embark on a PhD in Medical Science with an orientation towards Neurophysiology (sensorimotor neurophysiology). The position is at the Department of Medical and Translational Biology at Umeå University and is temporary for four years, to start during October 1st 2024 or as agreed.

Description of the PhD project

Proprioception is essential for movement coordination. Muscle spindles are considered the principal receptors for proprioception. These complex sensory organs are traditionally believed to be muscle stretch receptors, signalling limb position and movement speed. Our lab has recently challenged such beliefs by showing that spindles are also highly responsive to local muscle pressure. These findings urge a re-evaluation of proprioceptive feedback in various sensorimotor contexts and neuromuscular pathologies. Part of the PhD project will further assess the impact of muscle pressure on human spindles. The project will therefore add significantly to our understanding of how we perceive our muscles' mechanical state.

Moreover, advanced processing of sensory signals is generally believed to occur exclusively in the CNS. We have recently proposed that advanced signal-processing functions may also occur in the peripheral nervous system, at the level of muscle spindle organs. Unlike other peripheral sensory organs, spindles are directly and independently controlled by the nervous system itself, via γ motor ('fusimotor') neurons. Fusimotor neurons receive extensive descending and peripheral input, but the role of these rich neural connections has remained unclear.

The PhD project will couple in vivo human microneurography (MNG) with robotic technologies and custom designed tools to investigate the nature and role of spindle afferent activity across sensorimotor contexts. A mammalian (rodent) model will also be used to investigate brain mechanisms involved in fusimotor control. The PhD candidate will therefore train in diverse techniques and will be expected to record, analyze and communicate a variety of neurophysiological and behavioral data.

Through this project the PhD candidate will be part of the research environment at the DimitriouLab.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a university degree equivalent to a European University Masters degree or to have completed course requirements of at least 240 credit points, of which at least 60 credit points should be at second-cycle level.

Applicants must also be fluent in spoken and written English. English skills and the ability to benefit from the doctoral education will be evaluated by the departmental postgraduate studies board.

The PhD student will participate in activities provided by the Department of Medical and Translational Biology, involving interaction with researchers from different fields and access to various scientific and technical expertise.

The person employed as a PhD student will primarily devote his-/or herself to his/her own education. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher. Our goal is to provide the supportive and inspiring environment required to ensure a good start to your research career.

Qualifications

In addition, the applicant should, through university studies or other equivalent education, have gained basic theoretical knowledge within one or more of the following subject areas: neuroscience, biostatistics, biomechanics, electrical engineering, cognitive science, biology, psychology, physiology, or equivalent.

Other subject areas may also be relevant since we are above all looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in developing a deeper understanding of sensorimotor control.

Prior research experience, particularly handling and analyses of research data as well as statistical and programming skills will be viewed favourably.

The applicant must be able to work independently as well as collaborate with members of the research team. The ideal candidate should have excellent communication skills to be able to interact effectively with colleagues. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, analytical skills and scientific reasoning, as well as and the ability to write and understand scientific text.

Basis of assessment

Evaluation of candidate ability and the potential to perform well is based primarily on:

Knowledge and skills relevant to doctoral studies within the research area The ability to formulate and solve scientific questions Skills in written and oral communication in English Other experience relevant to doctoral studies, such as relevant professional experience

Good collaborative skills, drive and the ability to work independently are considered positive merits.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants based on their qualifications and their ability to benefit from studies at the doctoral level. After the selection of the suitable candidate, the process for admission to doctoral studies will commence. An admission decision will be taken by the faculty's director of studies.

About the employment

The employment is limited to four years full-time starting from October 1st 2024 or as agreed upon. Wage allocation will reflect the established salary scale for doctoral student employment. According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 12, Section 2), the decision on employment cannot be appealed.
