Post-doc position on modelling of impaired micromobility riding

Gothenburg, Sweden Chalmers tekniska högskola Full time

Approximately one in four of all e-scooterists seeking medical care after a crash is intoxicated. Further, In Sweden, 20% of the cyclists who die in traffic have alcohol above the permitted level. We have the technology to prevent these crashes with intelligent applications. However, for this technology to deliver the expected benefits we need to understand the behaviour of intoxicated riders and teach machines how to recognize it. Would you like to help us out saving cyclist and e-scooterist lives?

Information about the division and the department
In the at the we apply human factors and engineering to better understand the safety problem, find solutions, and assess the impact of both problems and solutions on safety. Specifically, within the research area of road user modelling, we develop computational model that may support intelligent applications and automated driving. Within the micromobility group, the research activities range from computational modeling of rider and driver behavior to how to integrate such models into intelligent and communication systems. This post-doc position will focus on modelling of cyclists and e-scooterist behaviour to support active safety applications.

Our mission is to understand why crashes happen and how they can be prevented, with a special focus on technological solutions. Our research is at the border between human factors and engineering and leverages a large network of transport stakeholders, including road authorities (e.g., Trafikverket), industry (e.g., Bosch), insurance agencies (e.g., Folksam), and municipalities (e.g., Göteborg Stad).

Major responsibilities
You will be devoted to micromobility research and specifically to running experiments, performing data analysis, and writing up results about intoxicated riding. We foresee large experiments with a motion analysis system, where intoxicated (and not intoxicated) participants will ride bicycles and e-scooters and perform different avoidance maneuvers. These experiments will be the basis to gather data for modeling road user behaviour and devise predictive models that may help machines understand human behaviour and prevent intoxicated riders to cause harm to themselves or other road users. Supervision and co-supervision of master and PhD students will also be part of your responsibilities. A small amount of teaching is also envisioned. Presenting research results in oral and written form is fundamental for this position to make sure results from the experiments are properly disseminated. Finally, you will also support writing new research grants on micromobility and intoxicated riding for different national and international sponsors.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position you:

must hold a doctoral degree in engineering by the time the position starts, and awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline, Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*. must have excellent knowledge of the English language (both oral and written). must have extensive experience in programming (e.g., Python) and modeling human behaviour. must have experience in planning and running controlled experiments, including participants recruitment, preparation of applications for ethical approval, and data collection in a laboratory set-up.

Project work and work experience in the following domains is meritorious: a) computational rider modeling, b) work with time-series behavior data, c) micromobility safety.

As the work will be conducted in a highly multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment, cultural awareness and good collaboration and communication skills are fundamental. It is equally important that you are quality-conscious and a problem solver. As a post-doctoral fellow you also have to be responsible, creative, and curious.

* The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
